SIX local Rotary clubs have joined forces to donate $11,000 towards a Myeloma Nursing Scholarship at GV Health, helping expand access to specialised blood cancer care for patients across the Goulburn Valley.
The Rotary Clubs of Shepparton, Shepparton Central, Shepparton South, Mooroopna, Tatura and Kyabram have collectively funded the scholarship to support a GV Health nurse to undertake specialist training in myeloma and haematology nursing. The support comes at critical time, as demand at GV Health’s Oncology Unit has increased by 54 per cent, rising from 10,679 to 16,476 treatments, over the last four years.
Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that begins in plasma cells, which are responsible for helping the body fight infection. The disease can cause bone pain, fatigue, recurrent infections and kidney complications. While myeloma is generally considered a long-term condition, advances in treatment mean many people can successfully manage the disease and maintain a good quality of life.
GV Health Chief Executive Matt Sharp said the scholarship would have a lasting impact on cancer care in the region.
“We are very grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Shepparton, Shepparton Central, Shepparton South, Mooroopna, Tatura and Kyabram for their generous support. Having highly skilled nurses with specialist knowledge in myeloma care will enhance GV Health’s capacity to support people living with blood cancers throughout their treatment journey, reducing the need for patients to travel to metropolitan centres for specialist care,” said Mr Sharp.
“Our experience with providing these types of scholarships is positive in expanding our specialist services and supporting professional development of staff which benefits recruitment and retention.”
Shepparton Central Rotary Club President, Allen Gale said the clubs were proud to support an initiative that would deliver long-term benefits for the community.
“The joint support across six Rotary clubs is another example of cooperation for an important cause that benefits the whole Goulburn Valley region.”
