Shepparton has the unenviable record of being in the top 5 regions with poor heart health conditions in Victoria and has the highest incident rate of hospitalisation required for it per population than any other region.
Getting support in the recovery stage has been limited and a new stroke support service has recently commenced operation at the Community Health Centre, GV Health.
Gillian McLeod, the centre coordinator has opened with a COVID friendly activity schedule to support people in post-stroke, to readjust to getting back into the community.
This month, aside from group walks, there are plans to introduce more activities including canoeing, hydro pool classes (assisted by an exercise physiologist) and a human bookclub.
“I would like to reach out to people recovering from stroke to become a member of our group so that we may assist them progress on that journey,” said Gillian.
The Shepparton Stroke Support Service is located at Community Health Centre, GV Health, 121 Corio Street, Shepparton and can be reached on 0448 693 298 or by email at shepparton@strokeassociation.com.au for more information.
