MOTORISTS are being reminded to slow down, take care, and ensure they and their vehicle are prepared if travelling over the Queen’s birthday long weekend.
From 12am Friday, June 10, to 11.59am Monday, June 13, police and highway patrol units will be combining for a statewide operation called Operation Regal.
“There will be more random checks and people can expect to see more pre-liminary testing than usual, especially in the regions,” said Acting Senior Sergeant Tom Brown.
In his highway patrol unit, officers have responded to 11 deaths that could have been avoided. The message police want to get across is to be safe and take care on roads this long weekend.
“If you’re travelling this weekend, make sure your vehicle is safe and prepared, and that you feel well rested. We attend too many head-on collisions that didn’t need to happen,” Tom said.
“We find long weekends are high risk periods on our roads, and winter weather can make conditions more dangerous.”
Police will have a major presence on major artillery roads around the state, and targeting the snowfields, checking for speed, impaired driving, distracted driving, and fatigue.
“If you’re driving this weekend, be fully prepared to be tested for drugs and alcohol.”
