RETURNING for the first time in two years, the 2022 Vic Variety Bash is set to be a big one, with 130 cars prepared for the 10-day journey from Melbourne to Cairns, to raise funds for disadvantaged children.
Kialla’s Don Dimstas is joining the Bash in his Top Gun themed 1983 Holden WB Statesman Deville.
He scored a seat in a car for the 2019 Bash, travelling to Geraldton, WA.
“It was an unbelievable experience,” said Don. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d have an experience like that, so of course I’ve organised a car of my own to tackle the Bash this year.”
With the help of local businesses, Don has already raised $20,000, equating to the same amount spent on the car, which has also been supported by local businesses including L&P Mackin who supplied new tyres, and parts from Burson Auto Parts.
“The support has been amazing. Variety is a fantastic charity, and no one has hesitated to get behind us and the cause. Plus participating in the Bash, you get to see the difference they make.”
“We start each day giving out little things out to kids at schools – this could be games, socks, balls, t-shirts, small things to make their day, and donations too. They cook us breakfast, we get our coordinates and then we are off to another part of the country,” said Don.
He will be driving with his son in law, Vic Bovalino and cousin, Cohn Kreskas, who are bringing Top Gun costumes on the road.
“I suppose depending on the day you’ve had will decide who gets to wear the Goose costume,” joked Don.
The Top Gun 1983 Statesmen Deville is a three-speed automatic, with a 5L engine and its’ very own fighter jet.
