DUSK settled on the Negev Desert, Palestine, as 800 Australian Light Horsemen charged 6km to secure the town of Be’er Sheva, bringing a close to the battle in the Sinai Palestine Campaign of World War I, on October 31, 1917. With bayonets in hand, they flew over the Turkish trenches to capture the town and gain access to much-needed water wells. The capture of Be’er Sheba enabled British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza on November 7 and advance into Palestine.
