THE second Regional Rummage took place Sunday, November 14, at Victory Hall in Tatura.

Founded by Nicole Morse, a young woman who grew up om a small family farm Tatura, the Regional Rummage is an opportunity for individuals to sell their pre-loved clothing and for people to pick up a curated collection of secondhand wares.

Miss Morse studied fashion merchandising at RMIT, and as a university student she loved hitting up secondhand stores, but ultimately, she felt how hard it is to pass on unwanted clothing without contributing to landfill.

“People may be sick of hearing me say this, but Australians throw around six kilograms of clothing into landfill every 10 minutes and 24 percent of Aussies aged 16-34 throw clothes away because they’re bored,” said Nicole.

“Regional Rummage allows you to get a new wardrobe without contributing the textile waste, it’s an opportunity to be a part of the circular economy.”

There were 41 stalls this year and the venue reached capacity early on, with visitors lined down Hogan Street to see what was happening inside.

Passing on items that would otherwise be thrown away gives that item a new life and buying secondhand is a more conservative way to express modern consumption habits while keeping the planet in mind. Furthermore, real people selling real items is a new level of inclusivity and representation that big brands cannot replicate the way that a community is able.

We cannot change the consumption habits that have been pressed upon us, but we can work together to create fresh solutions to pressing waste problems.
