WORK has begun on KidsTown, with a concrete sports court that will include a half basketball court, a pickleball court, hopscotch markings and a large interactive chess board, catering to a wide range of ages and abilities.
The early works are a good sign from the bleak future the beloved playground was earmarked for before community outrage prompted Council to save KidsTown. Anyone who has visited the playground recently knows it is a shadow of its former glory.

Gone are the giant slides kids loved to climb to the top of and race down. Gone is the amphitheatre where childish laughter echoed. Gone is the cow maze that was perfect for games of chasey and hide and seek. Worst of all, is that the much-loved train tracks have been ripped up, leaving a lonely walkway that leads to nowhere.
The Master Plan (concept design) is underway. And will include further consultation opportunities for all members of the community, including local community groups.

“Planning for the future of KidsTown is progressing, with the Master Plan (concept design) currently being prepared. Further consultation will be undertaken with community members and groups in the coming months. KidsTown is a valued community asset, and Council is committed to working with the community to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy the facility,” said Council’s Manager Park, Sport and Recreation, Janelle Bunfield.
Works began on Monday, May 25 and are expected to take approximately five weeks to complete, weather permitting.
During construction, the section of the site where work is taking place will be temporarily closed. The community is asked to observe all signage and remain clear of the area for their safety.
