FEELINGS of isolation, depression and hopelessness have surged during the pandemic.

Bumble Bee’s Marketplace, located in picturesque Nagambie, is a small business making a big impact.

“A lot of people have said that you can feel something when you come in here. We just try to provide a respectful vibe and a compassionate space for people who need it,” said managing director, Jackie Butterworth.

In addition to a huge selection of competitively priced fresh local produce, flowers, groceries, and more, Jackie with the help of Jan Morris, director of Morris Outside, found in the Marketplace, have created a space for locals to have a cuppa and a chat, after they noticed an alarming increase in customers seeming depressed or suicidal.

“COVID has sent most people in a spin. People are vulnerable; At least eight people have shared to me that they were planning to end their life. I don’t mind giving them my time to see them feel better when they’re leaving,” said Jan.

“It’s quite tragic to see people hurting and hearing they want to end their life. We just try to lighten them up as best we can.”

Many who have received support have become a part of the fabric that fills the Marketplace, bringing in meals they’ve made, contributing produce, crafts projects or anything else, knowing there are friends in the community who care. Bumble Bee’s Marketplace has become a hive of love and positivity.

Showing compassion and respect goes a long way, particularly when mental health services are at a critical point and more people than ever are looking for assistance. We’re fortunate to find this compassion in our own backyard.
