International Credit Union Day is celebrated on October 17 each year, recognising the unique contribution that credit unions make to the communities that they serve.

Historically, credit unions began as members of a community or industry coming together to pool their savings in order to offer credit to others within that same community or industry. These arrangements were particularly important where there was a limited representation by or access to larger banking and credit providers, and sought to build the strength of communities both by enabling growth and investment, as well as by contributing to causes of importance to the members of those credit unions.

The credit union model remains broadly the same today, with credit unions continuing to make significant contributions to their local communities.

In line with the people-first philosophy of credit unions, GMCU regularly supports more than 120 organisations and causes within our region and maintains ten branches in our local communities.

In recognition of International Credit Union Day, GMCU will donate $2.50 for every member who transacts in one of those branches on October 17, 2019 to the GV Health oncology special purpose fund. By making a transaction, you will be helping local people with the costs related to vital cancer diagnosis and treatment that they may not be able to otherwise afford.

Visit one of GMCU’s 10 branches and be part of making a real difference in our community.

“Life is about more than banking…that’s why we’re here to help,” said Melissa Ralph, CEO of GMCU.
