ONE of Australia’s most-loved musicals has roots in the Yorta Yorta region and is returning home for a special performance at Riverlinks Eastbank next week.

Of course, we’re talking about The Sapphires. The musical is a joyous production inspired by the incredible true story of four Yorta Yorta women. Typically country singers, the four young women change their tune when they’re suddenly given the chance to dress up in sequins and sing pop and soul hits to try and spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War.

The musical is written and directed by Tony Briggs, son of one of the original Sapphires, who says he will deliver one of the most intimate versions of The Sapphires story yet.

Performer, Mindy Kwanten, who plays Cynthia from The Sapphires said, “We are doing over 158 shows across Australia in just 10 months but to be able to perform this Yorta Yorta story on Yorta Yorta country is something truly special and unique.

“It’s hard to find the words to describe the feeling. Everyone is just so excited be performing in Shepparton and these shows are going to blow the roof off!”

The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale about the unbelievable journey of the group who sang Motown Soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval.

The Sapphires will be running two performances at Riverlinks Eastbank on Wednesday, May 22 at 10:30am and 7:30pm. Tickets are available online or through the Riverlinks Box Office.
