KATIE Singleton-Foley is the clinic manager at Fur Life Shepparton. She began working with animals after having kids, by pursuing a vet nurse traineeship. Katie’s passion has seen her help animals in Australia and in Cambodia, where she lived for eight years.
She had her son with her in Cambodia and Katie says she has been lucky to work in family friendly practices, which has enabled her to juggle motherhood with her aspirations.
“I was extremely lucky that my son was old enough then that I could pick him up from school and have him in the staff room. Everybody had their children there watching TV and drinking Milo.”
“If that wasn’t an option, it would have been extremely difficult for me to fulfil my role.”
Fur Life Shepparton veterinarian, Dr Jessamy Alexander, has two children aged four and six years. Every day she travels a distance to get to Shepparton for work. Having a supportive partner and workplace and seeking additional support she needs allows her Dr Jessamy to manage her busy schedule.
“Networking is just listening to people and finding out what they’re doing and being interested. By asking questions and being interested a lot of opportunities can come up. You can find so much support through school, childcare, and in your neighbourhood. Start doing that earlier.”
