Sock donations needed for the homeless

DID you know that socks are one of the least donated, but highest demand items amongst our local homeless community? Think about it, I suppose when most of us throw out socks it’s because they are worn out or have holes in them, so it makes sense that they would not be donated. That although does not help the homeless especially heading into winter, everyone needs to keep their feet warm.

St Mel’s Kindergarten in Shepparton last year started a ‘sock drive’ where members of the local community generously donated pairs of ‘brand new’ socks to the centre. From there the centre gave them back to charities such as the ‘Winter Night Shelter’ to pass onto the homeless.

This year they are at it again, and on a mission to get the word out, and hopefully beat last year’s record of 225 pairs of socks. St Mel’s Kindergarten early childhood educator, Meghan Dodd expressed the importance on the matter.

“There are so many people in need living all around us, we need to support our community and help those who are vulnerable. This is also an important message to teach our children here at the centre, and all children. It’s not hard to be kind to others, and it’s a nice feeling to help others in need,” said Mrs Dodds.

Until May 28 you can donate socks for this much needed cause, but they must be brand new and must have a tag still on them. They can be dropped off at the kindergarten or to St Mel’s Primary School which is right next door.
