Shepparton’s Kerbside Transition Program
A SIGNIFICANT step towards a more sustainable future has been taken with Greater Shepparton City Council awarding a $1.4 million contract to Mastec Australia Pty Ltd. This contract, approved at the October Council Meeting, is a part of the next phase of the Kerbside Transition Program, aimed at improving waste recovery and recycling.
The contract marks the initiation of the manufacture and supply of purple glass bins and rural green bins, an effort funded by DEECA through the Glass Early Adopter Fund. Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, emphasised, “This contract is part of Council delivering a more sustainable waste model. We are working to divert waste from landfill and the introduction of the purple lid bin and a rural green lid bin forms part of the next stage of this kerbside transition.”
The Kerbside Transition Program, established to align with the Victorian Government’s push for single stream glass recycling, began its roll out in Kialla and Tatura in March. The program will see a purple lid glass-only bin in every kerbside collection property within Greater Shepparton by 2024.
In addition, the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) rural green lid bin will be available to residential rural properties, further enhancing the circular economy in the region.
