HIGH levels of blue-green algae have been detected in the first lake in Kialla Lakes. Warning signs have been placed in the area and will remain in place while the high levels remain present.
Blue-green algae occurs naturally in waterbodies. They contain toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Signs of algae contact are skin rashes or itchiness, sore eyes, ears and nose, or if swallowed, nausea or vomiting.
Greater Shepparton City Council has warned the public to avoid direct contact with the water. Council staff are also conducting water testing.
Kialla Lakes will not be closed to the public but those that use water from Kialla Lakes should seek an alternate water supply.
