EVERY week, something a little unexpected—and a whole lot of fun—is taking place at St Augustine’s Hall. Far removed from the calm of traditional classrooms, Year 7 students from Shepparton ACE Secondary College are balancing, juggling and tumbling their way toward improved physical fitness and social wellbeing, all while having a whole lot of fun as they immerse themselves in a repertoire of tricks, balance skills and creative performance.

Stretching across Term Two, the Year 7 students are instructed by Rich and Ryn from Nexus Circus, who present tailored workshops as part of the students’ physical education program. More than laughter, tumbles and triumphs, the weekly sessions not only align with ACE College’s ‘small school, big heart’ philosophy to life and learning, but actively provide students with opportunities to succeed through mastering circus skills and tricks, while building confidence, trust and resilience in a safe, fun and engaging space.
Enjoying the challenge while being fully present in both mind and body as they practise and concentrate on each skill, students also work collaboratively with their classmates at times, building communication skills, cooperation and patience. Frequently stopping to discuss their experiences, frustrations and successes, students are learning key skills that provide an enjoyable alternative to traditional sports while enhancing both coordination and social skills at the same time.
As Rich and Ryn get to know the students over the course of the term, sessions will become increasingly tailored to the group’s unique needs and skill progression. The workshops will incorporate equilibristic skills such as Rolla Bolla and mini trampoline, alongside object manipulation skills including juggling, diabolo sticks and tumbling hula hoops, and so much more, promoting active mindfulness and creative expression throughout the program.
This unique experience for the Year 7 students is just one of the many ways Shepparton ACE Secondary College’s small school ethos enables students to thrive and experience success in a safe, supportive environment while catering for individual needs.
