CHANGE is being driven from within at Greater Shepparton Secondary College, where student leadership is turning sustainability into everyday action. The Environmental Leaders are at the centre of this work, embedding practical environmental initiatives across the school and reshaping how the community approaches waste and resources. Their impact is visible across campus. Recycling systems have been strengthened through partnerships with Close the Loop and Ecobatt, improving the management of e-waste and batteries. Students have also created interactive recycling video games to engage peers in learning correct waste practices in a fun and accessible way. In addition, a school vegetable garden has been established, supporting hands-on learning and reinforcing a circular approach to food and waste. This work has been recognised at a state level, with GSSC named a finalist in the ResourceSmart Schools Awards, Victoria’s largest sustainability celebration, in the Emerging School of the Year category. Year 11 Environmental Leader Maddie Ryan said, “I enjoy planning and making new ideas for changes in the school and having the opportunity to see these changes happen.” Their work reflects the increasing role of student voice and leadership in driving positive, school-wide change.
