THE sound of some of Australia’s finest young pianists is filling Riverlinks Eastbank this week as Shepparton takes centre stage for the Australian National Piano Award.
Twelve talented pianists have converged on the region for the prestigious biennial competition, with finalists performing throughout the week as they compete for more than $75,000 in prize money.
Running from October 5-10, the Award brings together emerging classical musicians who have been selected through a rigorous national audition process.

THIS year’s Award received more applications than ever before after moving to an online application process, with the quality matched to the record numbers.
Across a demanding program of solo recitals, the pianists are being judged by an international panel of adjudicators, with performances showcasing technical brilliance, artistic depth and musical interpretation.
But the Award represents more than a competition for its finalists.
Held in Shepparton for almost 35 years, it has established a reputation as an important stepping stone for Australia’s emerging pianists, with past finalists going on to build international careers and receivecritical acclaim.

The event is also the product of an enormous local volunteer effort, with a dedicated team working behind the scenes to deliver the week-long program and welcome performers, adjudicators and audiences to the region.
For music lovers, the Award is a rare opportunity to hear some of Australia’s most promising young classical pianists perform live, while placing Shepparton firmly on the national musical map.
The Australian National Piano Award continues at Riverlinks Eastbank, Shepparton, until October 10.
