MANY parents are choosing to enrol their child in tutoring to give them the best chance at excelling at school. Tutoring can give teachers flexibility while supplementing their income.
Ashu Bilkhu is one such teacher, who has been tutoring at the Shepparton Kip McGrath Education Centre for the past six years. Many tutors still teach in schools but also help kids on some afternoons.
Ashu says the most rewarding part of the role is watching students improve every week.
“I’ve never seen any student who wouldn’t improve usually within one or two terms. It feels great to see their results going up and we get heaps of positive feedback from parents about kids gaining confidence to have a go,” said Ashu.

Tutors deliver sessions on numeracy and literacy to students from prep to Year 10, with limited spots for VCE students. Students each see a specific tutor every week, under whose guidance the students work on their own custom-made programs, which may include worksheets, skillbuilders, or extension programs.
“We start after school from 3.40pm onwards and finish at 7 or 8pm, depending on the number of students. Usually, we work with three to four students for an hour-long session, with half students working on a laptop and the others on worksheets, and they rotate through activities all the time,” Ashu explained.
“The program itself has been developed with the input of thousands of Kip McGrath teachers over the last 40 years and focuses on where students may have gaps in their learning. Tutors have access to all the content. The programs are easy to understand and comprehensive, covering all the things you’d expect a student to learn including numeracy, spelling, comprehension, reading, and more.”

The Kip McGrath Education Centre, located on the corner of Verney and New Dookie Road, Shepparton, is seeking new tutors for English and maths lessons ahead of term one.
Qualified teachers are preferred but anyone who possesses relevant knowledge and experience are welcome to apply by emailing a cover letter and CV to shepparton@kipmcgrath.com.au
