A sign of the times

While road crews have been working in recent weeks to patch potholes along the Goulburn Valley Highway, many sections remain in poor condition, with some recent repairs already deteriorating following the latest wet weather. Motorists have also reported vehicles sustaining tyre, wheel and suspension damage after striking potholes on both the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Hume Freeway.

In a move that has attracted attention, illuminated electronic signs appeared along sections of the highway last week, warning motorists: “Potholes Ahead Next 20km”. According to the Herald Sun, it remains unclear how much the temporary signs cost or how long they will remain in place. Basic patching is expected to begin again this week, weather permitting, but road rehabilitation and upgrades are not scheduled.

NO SIGNS OF UPGRADES… Electronic signs have been installed on major freeways in northern Victoria, including two on the Goulburn Valley Highway between Kialla and Nagambie, warning drivers of ‘Potholes ahead next 20km’. There is approximately 45 km between the two townships connected by the highway. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
