FOR the last time this year, Greater Shepparton City Council has met for its ordinary meeting on Tuesday, December 20.

At the meeting, Council resolved to lease land at 20-22 Perrivale Drive to Kids Under Cover, following community consultation, to facilitate a Village 21 development.

Village 21 is an innovative model which seeks to assist at-risk youth to successfully transition to independent living from out of home care. Once constructed, the development will accommodate three two-bedroom studios for affordable housing and two one-bedroom studios for live-in mentors.

“Council agreed that social housing is a community need and was able to identify land suitable for future development,” said mayor Cr Shane Sali, acknowledging the need for appropriate housing for at-risk young people in the region.

Kids Under Cover is a non-profit focused on delivering the unique combination of studio accommodation and education scholarships as a practical and proven strategy in preventing youth homelessness.

Following Council’s decision, Kids Under Cover will be seeking project funding and will commence the planning process through the state government before commencing any development. This planning process is subject to further community consultation and will be overseen by the Victorian Government.
