POLICE and WorkSafe are on-site following an explosion at a North Shepparton business earlier this morning that injured six people.
The incident was reported around 8am this morning, Tuesday, May 2 when nearby residents heard the explosion from up to a kilometre away.
Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site, and the injured were provided medical assistance.
Two patients were airlifted to Melbourne in a critical condition, while the remaining four were taken to Goulburn Valley Health. Emergency service workers continue to be present at the site.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and it is unclear at this point what led to this tragic incident.
However, given the nature of the recycling plant, it is likely that the presence of combustible materials could have contributed to the explosion. At this point, it is thought that the explosion was caused by a small amount of gas that accumulated while workers were shredding aerosol cans.
WorkSafe is on the scene and conducting an investigation at this present moment.
