Transforming the local ecosystem, the Waranga Basin Fish Habitat Installation Project is set to improve fish habitats in Victoria and introduce a healthier, more diverse fish population. The project, spearheaded by the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs (GVAAC), aims to introduce native timber habitats to support the existing Redfin and the Golden Perch species, aided by the stocking of 750,000 Golden perch fingerlings over three years.

This strategically designed project promises a significant boost in primary production, providing feeding, cover, and spawning benefits for prey like small fish and macroinvertebrates. For Golden perch fingerlings, this habitat offers better survival rates and growth opportunities, while adult predatory fish will find an accommodating aggregation spot for migrating and feeding.

Roland Huber, Chair of GVAAC, envisions the Waranga Basin becoming “one of the best inland recreational fisheries in Victoria” thanks to this endeavour. The project wouldn’t be possible without the assistance from the Wedge Group, Victorian Fisheries Authority’s support, and the Campaspe Shire Council’s generous contribution of native vegetation. The project is set to launch in October 2023, promising a new era for the region’s recreational fishing.
