THE Cat in the Hat is up to his tricks while Hermione casts a spell. Wally is lost, Matilda has been stolen and the Dalmatians are missing as well. Suspicions are roused and ears are pricked but all eyes fall on Cruella de Vil.

Book Week has been bringing children and stories together all-round Australia since 1945, and from Aug 20-Aug 26, the School of Wonder students at St Anne’s College have been no exception.

Beginning with a two-week reading challenge, students at the school have dived into books shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, for their annual awards, and have explored the fantastical worlds created by some of the country’s best authors and illustrators.

“We have been doing a lot of reading and the children have had a lot of fun enjoying activities relating to this year’s nominated books,” says Kara McCann, School of Wonder team leader.

“Enjoying books is a lifelong skill of being able to read, but also as a hobby or an interest reading allows you to get lost in a story, and that is something you can do no matter what age you are.”

Energised by story and inspired by their favourite fictional characters, Book Week celebrations culminated at St Anne’s with a colourful dress-up parade.

“I just love dressing up,” said year 2 student, Aki Fujimoto, brandishing a pirate’s hook, “All I want to do is pretend I’m a character from a book I’ve read,” he said with a smile.
