ON Wednesday, June 7, Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Shane Sali and CEO Peter Harriot were joined by world champion BMX rider Leigh Egan and Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Brett Lancaster OAM to launch Regional Cities Victoria’s (RCV) Commonwealth Games legacy document “The Winning Formula for Regional Victoria”. The document outlines the need for measures that ensure all regional cities benefit from the stream of athletes, visitors, and publicity the Games will bring.
Mayor, Cr Shane Sali, Deputy Chair of RCV, emphasises the importance of all regional cities reaping the benefits of the Games.
“Greater Shepparton’s involvement in the 2026 Commonwealth Games is a massive achievement which will greatly benefit the local community and provide positive economic stimulus for our accommodation providers, hospitality and retail, as we welcome an influx of visitors to the region.
“We want to ensure the Games create a legacy for the whole of regional Victoria which reaches all corners of the state, and extends beyond the period of the 2026 Games,” said mayor, Cr Shane Sali.
Some of the key priorities include implementing a $30M Regional Parks and Civic Space Program to create new parkland and upgrade existing open spaces, sponsoring free cultural activities and events across the regions, and investing $30M into a tourism campaign to promote regional Victoria.
