THE new Peter Copulos Sporting Pavilion at Shepparton East Primary School has been a welcome addition, with the infrastructure coming to great use on the rainy morning of the official opening.
“Approximately four years ago, Shepparton East PS had a vision to build a pavilion over the existing sporting courts to provide a multi-purpose space for students, staff, and the wider community,” said principal, Les Walsh.
“In 2019, this vision was finally realised allowing our school to utilise the new facilities as a place to conduct undercover physical education lessons, assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, performances, as well as allowing for a space that can be accessed by the wider Shepparton East community.”
The school council and key stakeholders set a fundraising target of $200,000 and subsequently raised around $130,000 in sponsorship. The pavilion was named after local philanthropist, Peter Copulos, for his generous donation of $50,000.
“My wife, Maria and I are very pleased to be here today for the opening of the sports pavilion. It’s been great to be involved in providing funds for the structure. We’ve had many of our family members who have attended the school over the years,” said Mr Copulos.
Peter Copulos has supported several local causes over the years, including Shepparton Art Museum, Goulburn Valley Health, GV Hospice, and many more. With nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, “so far,” it is no surprise that the Copulos family have invested in improving the school’s facilities.
“Primary school is such an important part of a small local community like Shepparton East,” said Mr Copulos.
Principal Les thanked all the sponsors, past and present families, and the school council for their contributions which ensured the pavilion came to fruition.
