Carmel Johnson has just ended a thirty-year career at GV Health including serving ten plus years as Director of the GV Health Foundation. Carmel was recently appointed as Head of Development at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) where her role will be to manage and lead SAM’s ongoing fund and friend raising.

For more than 40 years Carmel has worked and lived in the Goulburn Valley. Prior to her GV Health role, Carmel worked in leadership positions in the disability sector and was the inaugural principal at the Verney Road Special School, and later the Manager of Connect GV (then known as the GV Centre).

She was the inaugural Chair of the Shepparton Festival and serves on a number of community and corporate boards, including as Deputy Chair of the Fairley Foundation. Carmel anticipates her position as Director of the Greater Shepparton Foundation will be an exciting opportunity to contribute her knowledge and skills to help foster community engagement in celebrating and showcasing arts and culture.

Where are you from, and how did you find your way to Shepparton?
I have lived in Shepparton since I was married in 1979. Before moving to Shepparton, I was working and living in Melbourne.
What do you do here?

I am fortunate to be heading up the development team at SAM, Shepparton Art Museum.

What’s the best part of your job?
Meeting and engaging with our community, and getting everyone excited about this remarkable new building which will showcase and celebrate the creative culture of the Goulburn Valley.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy walking, gardening and being outdoors.

What’s your favourite thing about Shepparton?
The people and their generosity of spirit.

What’s one thing you would change about Shepparton to improve it?
The finalisation of the re-development of GV Health.

What are some words you would use to describe Shepparton?
Innovative, progressive and vibrant.
