WE sat down with GMCU’s CEO Gerard Smith for a chat about what he loves about working in the Goulburn Valley and being the leader of one of our region’s best-loved credit unions

Where are you from, and how did you find your way to Shepparton?
I’m from Nyngan, in country NSW, and I have a strong connection with this region. Back in the 1800s, my great-grandfather was born and lived in Tongala, before eventually making his way to northern NSW.
Having had 30 years of experience in senior positions in the banking industry across Australia, and very committed to the credit union movement, I came to Shepparton to take up the job of CEO of GMCU.
What primary, high school and uni did you attend?
I attended St Josephs’ Primary, Nyngan, Nyngan High School and Red Bend Catholic College, University of Technology Sydney Bachelor of Education (Adult) and Charles Sturt University, where I studied a master’s in management IT.
What do you do here?
I’m the CEO of GMCU, one of our region’s best-loved credit unions.
What’s the best part of your job?
Leading and empowering my team, which allows them to support and empower our community with their finances. I also love to encourage diversity and inclusion in my team and in the wider community.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love being social and spending time with friends, and I’ve just completed my marriage celebrant’s certificate.
What’s your favourite thing about Shepparton?
There’s such a strong community connection in Shepparton. The warmth and friendliness from staff, customers and neighbours has all been so positive. I felt like I belonged straight away. Also, the community is so switched on and supportive of everything from the arts, through to sports and education.
What’s one thing you would change about Shepparton to improve it?
I’d love to see more people come to Shepparton to live and experience our beautiful lifestyle and great community. But on second thoughts, I think I might like to keep that as our secret!
What are three words you would use to describe Shepparton?
Friendly, community-minded and forward-looking.
