Here comes the sun

FIERY TIMES... Sunset captured at the Winton Wetlands by photographer, Rene Martens. Monday, December 21 will be the longest day of the year.

THIS Monday will be the longest day of the year. And no, not because it’s Monday, or even the last Monday before Christmas. It’s literally the longest day of the year.

Monday, December 21 is the summer solstice for those who live Down Under,
where the hours of daylight compared to night-time max out. From Monday onwards, the length of daylight each day will start to recede – despite temperatures continuing to rise through January and February.

Daytime on Monday will last a lengthy 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 52 seconds. Compare this to the winter solstice, on June 21, where daylight lasted for only a brief nine hours, 40 seconds, and 29 seconds.

Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as ‘midsummer’.

In Australia however, it’s barely noted, lest it’s mentioned in a local newspaper. You’re welcome.
