Lovell chases funding for Shepparton stadium

Greater Shepparton City Council have a vision to redevelop the Shepparton Sports stadium, which first opened in 1972 as a two-court facility, into a multi-faceted Shepparton Sports and Events Centre.

Speaking in State Parliament recently, the local Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, said council planned to deliver the project in three stages, with Stage 1 costed at $42M and sought a funding commitment from the Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas of $13M to help deliver the first stage.

Ms Lovell said, “A completed Shepparton Sports and Events Centre will change the face of sport and entertainment in the Goulburn Valley forever by providing first class facilities to local kids, as well as bring an additional 24,000 visitors into the region every year.

“Now that Greater Shepparton Council has awarded the final design tender for the project, it is time the State Government stepped up and committed their share of funding to make the Shepparton Sports and Events Centre a reality.”

Stage 1 of the project will deliver 3 new multi-purpose courts, a 3000-seat retractable grandstand, new wet area amenities, administration hub and a redesigned carpark.

Ms Lovell said that a cost benefit analysis of the project found it would create 235 jobs during construction and the additional events attracted by the new facility would inject an additional $12.3 million into the Greater Shepparton economy each year.
