IT’S mid-morning Tuesday and Banmira Specialist School student Riley Crisp is surrounded by tools, parts and packaging. He is engrossed in the final assembly of a brand new, bright red ride-on mower for a customer and he couldn’t be happier.
Shepp City Garden Equipment, on Benalla Road is where Riley, a Year 11 student, has found his calling in small engine maintenance and repair.
“I just want to work here forever, this is my dream workplace,” said Riley.
Business owner Mat Sheldon was initially approached by Goulburn Murray Local Learning Employment Network (GMLLEN), which proposed a week of work experience for Riley.
That success led to a Structured Workplace Learning arrangement, where Riley will continue to work every Tuesday at Shepp City Garden Equipment throughout 2026, pursue Certificate II Automotive studies every Wednesday and attend high school the rest of the week.
Riley didn’t miss a beat over the recent school holidays, putting in his Tuesday shifts voluntarily. His progression may lead to a school-based apprenticeship next year, allowing Riley to complete his schooling and get a head start on a formal apprenticeship that will set him up for lifelong work.
For Mat and Bel Sheldon, it’s already been a win-win for their business.
“I can tell the difference when someone does their job, and when someone enjoys doing their job, as for Riley, he just loves his job,” said Mat.
“From day one, Riley showed a great attitude and a willingness to learn. He’s the type of student who just wants to get in and work, from sweeping up the shop to equipment repair, and he genuinely enjoys it.
“I’ve always taken on work experience students, because you never know when you’re going to find your next star.”
