AFTER more than three years of planning, negotiations and gathering of funds, Tatura’s water tower mural is now complete.

The mural is a testament of the Anzac legacy, with a waterfall of remembrance poppies featuring on one side and a portrait of Sir John Monash on the other.

Sir John Monash was one of Australia’s leaders in World War I and was also an engineer, he aided in the design of water towers and bridges in our region and was instrumental in developing the irrigation system in Tatura.

The Tatura tower was designed by Monash in May 1911 for the Tatura Waterworks Trust (now Goulburn Valley Water), and construction of the 364,000 litre-capacity tower was completed in April 1912.

It’s the earliest surviving example of a reinforced concrete tower of this design to be constructed in Victoria.

Artists Cam Scale and Andrew Davis are the artists behind the magnificent works.

$45,000 for the project was raised through government grants and community fundraising to complete the mural.

“It will honour the history of the region and add some colour to the town’s landscape,” Tatura RSL Sub-Branch Mural Committee Chairman, Robert Mathieson, said.

“Thank you to all the members of our community for their support and donations, we appreciate each and every person who contributed to make this project happen,” said Mr Mathieson.

“The artists have worked so hard, they spent an entire day painstakingly marking out a grid to ensure the painting was perfect, they are brilliant. They have stuck by us since the infancy of this project, from over three years ago until now.”

To view the completed mural, visit Tatura’s water tower located on Murchison-Tatura Road, a few doors down from Lagozzino’s Top Pub.
