LOCAL hands-on learning and re-engagement program for young people, Pit Stop, is up and running again after having to close in October 2022 due to the DECA building being inundated with floodwater.

The original premises in Wanganui Rd is still under restoration; however, with support from Pit Stops partner Wodonga Tafe, the program is temporarily operating from an alternative building on the same site.

Pit Stop coordinator Ross is excited to have the program back in action.

‘It’s such a popular program, particularly for young people who find working in a typical classroom environment challenging. They can learn new skills here, and we often find they get so engaged in what they’re doing that they don’t want to leave”, remarked Ross.

The program, an initiative of the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, caters to individuals and groups from primary and secondary schools. Students have the opportunity to work on small engines, cars and bikes. Staff have also extended the program to cater for students’ interests by introducing new activities such as jewellery making and painting.

The staff’s adaptable approach to their work was highlighted during the program’s closure, with Ross and fellow staff members Chris Windsor and Mat Golding assisting families impacted by the flood.

“Chris is a qualified mechanic. He assessed 28 flood-damaged cars, nine of which he got back on the road. We also sourced several second-hand cars, including one that was donated, which Lighthouse then gifted to families needing extra support to get back on their feet”, said Ross.
