AT LAST, construction of the former Maude Street Mall is complete and the one-way street from Fryers to High Street was officially opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning, on Thursday, December 8.
The $17.15M project was officially opened by Greater Shepparton mayor, Cr Shane Sali and Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, John Anderson. Community members, fellow councillors and local members of parliament came out on the day in celebration.
“The completion of this major project comes as a pivotal time for our region after two years of Covid and the most recent flooding event, we’ve all show strong resilience within our communities,” said Cr Sali.
He thanked retired Federal Member Damian Drum and former State Member Suzanna Sheed for their contributions to the project, who secured $12.32M in State and Federal funding for the project.

“This is indeed a great day that many thought would never happen,” said Mr Anderson, who acknowledged the faith of all parties, including Council, Governments, businesses and community members who have seen the redevelopment through.
He also recognised Clyde and Val Young, of Jeff Young Shoes, “who over many years had the confidence to develop and hold properties here right in the middle of Maude Street.”
“Clyde passed just a few weeks ago, but he did live to see the project to almost completion,” Mr Anderson said.
The redevelopment was undertaken by local business, Jarvis Delahey Contractors. In addition to one-way, low-speed traffic, including on-street parking – which is complimentary until February, Maude Street now features a new playground, CCTV, audio, modern street furniture, lighting and shelters fitted with solar panels.

Cr Sali and Mr Anderson were the first to drive down the redeveloped Maude Street, riding in a classic Chevrolet with a trio of elves in the back seat.
“It’s great to see this project completed in time for Christmas trade and the complimentary parking initiative for December and January,” said Cr Sali.
“This is an exciting time for our community. It’s a big project, it’s been a long time in the making, and it’s great to have it finally open.”
$8.575M towards the Maude Street Mall Precinct Redevelopment came from the Commonwealth’s Building Better Regions Fund and $3.75M was obtained from the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund – Stimulus Round. Council provided the remaining $4.825M towards the $17.15M redevelopment.
