Sam Atukorala – Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District CEO

For well over a century, dating back to the early 1900s, Greater Shepparton has stood as a beacon, drawing individuals from every corner of the globe. In the past twenty years, this region has witnessed the arrival of a significant demographic shift, with individuals from refugee backgrounds now comprising a significant 10% of Shepparton’s population.

The Ethnic Council of Shepparton & District Inc., established in 1985, has steadfastly championed the cause of these multicultural communities. Today, it stands as a peak body, driven by the mission to advocate for and advance the social, cultural, and economic welfare of ethnic communities within the Goulburn Valley Region. Our commitment is unwavering, characterised by the delivery of innovative and top-tier services.

Having experienced migration firsthand, having lived in both Sydney and Melbourne, I instantly came to appreciate the exceptional nature of this community. It provided me not only with a profound sense of belonging but also with the opportunity to contribute to the dynamic and flourishing cultural setting. I am deeply honoured to be associated with an organisation that shares my passion for supporting multicultural communities.

Presently, Shepparton has evolved into a vibrant regional city, bolstered by a robust economy that stands as a testament to the collective contributions of successive waves of immigrants. Their deep-rooted impact has been instrumental in propelling the economic and cultural development of this region to new heights.
