SHEPPARTON has been selected as one of the first regional sites to deliver a new ‘Design by Nature’ education program about Biomimicry, using nature’s solutions to solve human challenges.

60 students from Guthrie Street Primary School and 30 students from Bright P-12 School participated in the special education program, which is more than a year in the making.

The program has been made possible thanks to relationship building efforts between the Melbourne-based Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV), the Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (FABGS), and the RiverConnect program, to create local opportunities for students in the Shepparton region to participate in RBGV’s education programs.

Jill Grant, member of the Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton committee said, “The Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton have been ‘chatting’ with the education team from RBGV for over 12 months regarding education days at the Botanic Gardens.

We feel privileged to be chosen for their new push to reach regional students. This should be an amazing day for students and teachers, and the Botanic Gardens volunteers can expand our knowledge and horizons in so many different ways, and looking at biomimicry is one of these ways.”

‘Design by Nature’ is funded through the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) initiative that provides opportunities for Victorian public school students to participate in high-ability learning programs.
