THERE were more than 150 people in attendance at the ‘Takeover Shepparton Youth Ideas Launch’ last Friday morning, at St Paul’s African House. The chatter in the room was loud, and you could almost feel the energy from the facilitators, presenters, and the young people of Shepparton, as soon as you entered the hall.

Takeover Shepparton is an exciting new storytelling and leadership program from the ABC and VicHealth. They have been working with local schools, organisations, and teenagers from all over town, to speak up about what is important to them.

Prior to the event on Friday, there where 44 people selected to work with the ABC Takeover team to produce stories for the ABC. The stories highlight the diversity and bravery of young people across the Greater Shepparton region.

Those same young adults on Friday, joined forces in groups to confront a panel discussion, on their ‘big ideas’ to improve life for young people in regional Australia. These brave, funny and inspiring youths tackled huge topics such as cultural awareness and improving mental health, and their ideas to the potential solutions, where just as bright.
