VICTORIA has recorded more insurance claims for stolen vehicles and thefts from motor vehicles than all other states combined, according to new Insurance Council of Australia data.
Insurers paid out $243M across 12,500 claims in 2025, with Victoria the only state to record an increase in vehicle theft-related claims.
Authorities have linked the rise to organised crime, youth offending and the growing use of electronic devices that can bypass vehicle security systems. Police estimate these devices are involved in more than 40 per cent of vehicle thefts.
The Holden Commodore was the state’s most stolen vehicle last year, while Melbourne’s City of Casey recorded the highest number of thefts.
