DESPITE the recent smattering of rain across the region, water storage levels supplying Euroa and Violet Town continue to decline due to ongoing dry conditions. As a result of the drought, Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) is urging residents in these towns to reduce their water usage to help prevent an increase in water restrictions in July. This callout from GVW is to protect local water storages, which have continued to fall since the introduction of Stage 2 water restrictions in May.
June 13 water storages sat at 18 per cent compared to 77 per cent at the same time last year.
Thanking residents in Violet Town and Euroa, Managing Director of GVW, Steve Capewell said,
“Euroa and Violet Town communities have a great understanding of the need to use water efficiently and wisely, and we very much appreciate their efforts to conserve valuable supplies.
“Unfortunately, storages continue to be impacted by this record-breaking stretch of low rainfall. If dry conditions continue, Stage 4 restrictions will be needed to further reduce pressure on drinking water supplies.”

The decision for townsfolk at this stage, to reduce their water usage is voluntary, providing them the option to stave off further restrictions for the time being.
“If we see a good result from the community response, we may be able to delay the implementation of Stage 4 restrictions, Dr Capewell said.
Delivering treated water to Euroa and Violet Town before Stage 2 water restrictions were introduced to supplement supply, GVW has been encouraging residents to use water wisely by utilising hose trigger nozzles, shower timers and water-efficient shower heads. Water can also be significantly saved by only running dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.
If stage 4 water restrictions are put in place, outdoor watering of lawns and gardens will be prohibited, as will be the filling or topping up of pools and spas. In addition, residents will no longer be able to wash outdoor hard surfaces, including cars unless it is necessary health and safety reasons.
