With an enviable reputation as a preferred local partner in regional planning, management and development, Shepparton-based multidisciplinary consulting firm Chris Smith & Associates (CS&A) embodies the very essence of Our Goulburn Valley Magazine.

From an aspirational vision in 2006 to ensure a strong local focus, this local business has evolved to become one of our region’s many great success stories, now with four offices located across north-central Victoria, in Shepparton, Echuca, Kilmore and Wangaratta.

In less than 20 years, CS&A has become a significant contributor to regional development, with project expertise in major residential, commercial and industrial infrastructure, agriculture and the growing renewable energy sector.

Managing Director Scott Golightly explained the firm’s focus and approach, saying, “As regional professionals who live within the communities we serve, we offer a depth of expertise and local knowledge, which enables us to provide advice that reflects the expectations of both our clients and the community.

“When considering projects, our team conducts feasibility and due diligence assessments to identify potential risks and potential impacts on community, environment and cultural heritage sites for the benefit of our clients.”

Whilst largely recognised for their work on many of the Goulburn Valley’s major civil construction developments and residential estates, the CS&A team has diversified its service focus. The company has established itself in the renewable energy sector, with involvement in a significant number of renewable energy projects up and down the east coast.

“We support a diverse range of private and public sector project developments across multiple industries and disciplines. Our local knowledge and extensive experience mean we can deliver cost-effective solutions whilst maintaining sustainable outcomes for the greater benefit of the community,” said Scott.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to facilitate all aspects of project development from civil construction to renewable energy,” Scott said, highlighting the firm’s engagement by the Victorian Fisheries Authority for the design and project management—through to delivery—of the impressive $15M Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery upgrade.

Most locally, the best example of our team’s capabilities in renewable energy would be a solar farm project we completed at Pine Lodge in 2023, which really highlights our efficiency and capabilities.

“From engagement to execution, our team delivered a comprehensive assessment of the project, which included a successful community consultation process, co-design and planning approval—all of which was achieved in just 132 days. The result: a 5MW Solar Farm featuring on-site battery storage, designed intentionally to co-exist with established farming operations and established upon areas of the farm identified as significantly underperforming.

“Ultimately, we were able to achieve an additional income stream for the landowner without sacrificing highly productive land parcels across the property, an outcome of which we’re really proud.”
