Matt Shaffer

CEO Dairy Australia

I’m excited to join the team at Dairy Australia. Over the past nine years, I’ve led DataGene, working closely with Dairy Australia to deliver genetic gains and herd improvement across the dairy industry. Earlier in my career, roles with Holstein Australia and Hancock Agriculture Investment Group gave me a broad perspective of dairy and agriculture.

I look forward to guiding Dairy Australia’s focus on enhancing farm profitability, improving herd and feed productivity, and ensuring long-term industry sustainability. In my first eight weeks, I’ve visited farmers and processors across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, with more regional visits planned.

Northern Victoria is a vital dairy hub, home to 728 farms producing 20 per cent of Australia’s milk, worth $1.2 billion at the farmgate, and accounting for a fifth of national dairy exports. Farmers here face challenges such as water allocation certainty, high input costs, and skilled labour shortages. Dairy Australia’s Murray team works alongside them, providing business planning tools, risk management support, and people development programs.

Meeting directly with farmers and industry ensures our investments deliver the greatest benefits. Despite challenges, I see significant opportunities ahead for Northern Victoria’s dairy sector with the right support and innovation.
