Flexible and varied experiences

FOR some, a job in retail can be a great way to enter or re-enter the workforce, while others make a career of retailing.

Many retail employers offer attractive benefits, including flexible working hours, the opportunity to move to management and the ability to meet and work with a wide variety of people. Some advantages of choosing a career in retail include:

  • Choice of location – retail positions are not difficult to find. Local data from 2019/20 shows this is the second largest industry behind healthcare and social assistance. Locally and further afield, you can choose a retail position in different industries depending on your interest and location, like fashion, tools, cars, jewellery or working in a supermarket.
  • Easy entry for newbies – many retail positions require little or no previous experience or special skills, meaning employees can start work immediately with on-the-job training.
  • Not stuck behind a desk – retail can provide an alternative to more sedentary occupations. Whether you’re assisting customers or bagging orders, you will be on your feet for much of the time. The fast-paced nature of many retail environments, particularly during the hectic holiday season, can offer the added appeal of a work shift that passes quickly.
