THE annual Dungala Kaiela Oration (DKO) will be presented on Yorta Yorta Country for the first time in two years later this month.
Each oration celebrates First Nations’ cultural identity while seeking to cultivate a collective vision for all people of the Goulburn Murray region, building important bridges to promote Indigenous education, social and economic development.
Audiences will hear from esteemed international educator, Professor Wiremu Doherty, chief executive at Te Whare Wãnanga o Awanuiãrangi, a Mãori tertiary organisation in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
DKO’s overarching theme, ‘The Invincible Spirit: defining the future’ exemplifies what makes the people of Yorta Yorta river country so strong, proud, and resilient. It also highlights the determination to look to the future, building economic prosperity through sustainable education and economic development initiatives.

Professor Doherty’s oration will build upon last year’s contribution by keynote speaker, Josephine Sukkar AM, who spoke on the preparedness and ability within Australia’s sporting infrastructure to address institutional racism and to be a critical cornerstone in creating a healthy, vibrant nation.
The Dungala Kaiela Oration will be presented at the Rumbalara Football Club (20 Mercury Drive, Shepparton) at 4.30pm on Wednesday, August 31.
