CURRENTLY with her teammates celebrating their big win on the Gold Coast, former Shepparton United co-captain Kate Adams spoke to us about her team’s VFLW grand final Port Melbourne win and the social benefits of playing football for girls.

Kate, a former standout for Shepparton United and the Murray Bushrangers, showcased her prowess in the midfield as Port Melbourne secured a hard-fought 5.5 (35) to 3.5 (23) win over Collingwood in the championship clash. This victory marked a significant milestone for Kate, as it was her first flag, and the excitement began well before the first bounce.

Reflecting on the experience, Kate stated, “Walking onto the ground and witnessing the fervour of supporters hours before the game was surreal. It felt like a ‘pinch me’ moment, a testament to the significance of the occasion.”

The journey leading up to the grand final was marked by challenges for the 21-year-old athlete. Adams had battled through injuries, including an ankle injury sustained just before the finals and earlier setbacks like a broken hand and wrist. However, her determination led her to embrace a resilient mindset and return to the game she loves.

“I was determined to hit the ground running despite the obstacles. Being out there and playing in the VFLW grand final was a moment of deep gratitude,” Kate shared.

Among the loyal supporters celebrating Kate’s victory was Dean Walton, her former coach at Shepparton United. Their connection traces back to her early years playing footy, and her leadership qualities were evident even then.

Adams’ leadership journey continued as she co-captained United and the Murray Bushrangers. Her accomplishments have made a lasting impact on local and women’s football, inspiring young female athletes to chase their dreams.

“I’m up on the gold coast with 15 of my best mates who I wouldn’t have if I didn’t play footy. It’s so much more than just a game, there’s a great social aspect from club functions to footy trips,” said Kate.

“It’s something for kids and young adults to have away from school, work and family. It’s a great outlet and it’s truly special to be apart of a team.”

Looking forward, Adams is resolute about her future with Port Melbourne. She expressed her commitment to return for another season, highlighting the special camaraderie and culture of the club. “The support, coaching staff (in particular, thank you to head coach Sean Buncle), and the club’s history make it a unique and cherished environment,” Adams affirmed.

Adams’ remarkable journey—from facing setbacks to lifting the VFLW grand final trophy—serves as a testament to her resilience, leadership, and the ever-growing influence of women’s football. Her story resonates as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and a testament to the power of determination and teamwork.
