Mad for Melbourne

SHEPPARTON resident, Wally Hudson has been an avid Melbourne Demons supporter his whole life, and he has the merchandise, memorabilia and memories to show for it. An old book on VFL rules he was gifted growing up is decorated with prominent signatures.

Ron Barassi has signed, “Keep on barracking for us,” inside the cover and Wally’s passion has persisted so strongly and contagiously that his late wife, Margaret, became just as enthused by the team.

“She went crazier for Melbourne than me, I think,” he says, “I could show you so many Melbourne footy jumpers, it would knock your eyes out.” He estimates Marg would have had more than 30 jumpers, and she was a Demon’s AFLW Foundation member.

“We got married in the mid-70s and watched Melbourne get thrashed week after week.”
Sadly, Margaret Hudson lost her three-year battle with ovarian cancer on May 16 this year.

To kick off footy season this year, Marg, Wally and close friends attended the president’s dinner and opening game.

“Marg was beside herself, she just loved it.” The kindness the Demon’s team have continued to show the family since learning of Marg’s passing has overwhelmed Wally. “They don’t have to do anything, but they’ve been more than kind to us.”

Mooroopna Football and Netball Club’s Clayton Oliver (Demons) and Laitham Vandermeer (Bulldogs) will go head-to-head in the 2021 AFL Grand Final.

Adding to the list of local talent in the Grand Final are Josh Schache, who once donned Seymour colours, and Charlie Sprago, former player for the Albury Tigers.
