FOR the first time in two years, the annual Dungala Kaiela Oration (DKO) is again presented on Yorta Yorta Country, at the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in North Shepparton this month.

The orations celebrate First Nations’ cultural identity and seek to foster a shared vision for all people of the Goulburn Murray region, building important bridges to promote Indigenous education, social and economic development.

Last year’s powerful oration was presented by keynote speaker, Josephine Sukkar AM. Ms Sukkar spoke on the willingness and ability within sporting infrastructure in Australia to tackle the insidiousness issue of institutional racism and to be a critical cornerstone in creating a healthy, vibrant nation.

This year, audiences will hear from esteemed international educator, Professor Wiremu Doherty, chief executive at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, a Maori tertiary organisation in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

The overarching theme, ‘The Invincible Spirit: defining the future’ exemplifies what makes the people of Yorta Yorta river country so strong, proud, and resilient. It also highlights the determination to look to the future, building economic prosperity through sustainable education and economic development initiatives.
