THE many advantages of dog ownership can be enjoyed at any age, but as we get older, having a furry companion can keep loneliness at bay. Living far from friends and family or finding yourself at home more often can bring on feelings of isolation and need for companionship, especially in recent times.

It’s important to select the right animal that suits you and your lifestyle. When it comes to selecting a dog breed in particular, factors to consider are energy levels (both your own and that of a dog breed’s), size, age, temperament, health susceptibilities and grooming requirements.

People have a wide range of needs and preferences, so the perfect pet for one senior may be entirely unsuitable for another. That said, some breeds have certain combinations of traits that make them popular choices for retirees. Here are some ideas for the perfect dog breed for you:

Corgi
Intelligent and lively, corgis are high-energy dogs that live for human attention and are big on pleasing their owners. Originally bred as herding dogs, corgis love hiking and being outside, and they need frequent daily walks. They have a protective nature and make good watchdogs. However, they can be prone to barking.

Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are tiny dogs that are full of personality. They are a good choice if you have a small property, but they need to be trained to deal with strangers and children. Fortunately, because they are so small, they can often fill their exercise needs indoors.

Maltese
Weighing in at just four to seven pounds, the tiny Maltese is widely regarded as the quintessential lap dog. Bright, gentle, and playful, these dogs get along well with other pets and are extremely attentive to their owners’ moods. They like going for short walks and dashing around the house. Their silky white coat doesn’t shed but does require daily brushing and weekly bathing.
