THERE are only hours left to register for the 14th annual Dungala Kaiela Oration (DKO), which returns to Yorta Yorta Country for the first time in two years today.

This prestigious and influential event is jointly sponsored by the Kaiela Institute (KI) and the University of Melbourne and hosted by the Rumbalara Football Netball Club. It encourages us to create a shared vision for the people of the Goulburn Murray region.

Audiences will learn from international educator, Professor Wiremu Doherty, chief executive at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, a Maori tertiary organisation in Aotearoa/New Zealand, who will address the important topic of Indigenous knowledges, prosperity and productivity.

Paul Briggs OAM, from KI says, “Over the past 13 years, we’ve had fantastic speakers come and contribute to the future of the Goulburn Valley. It started with Dr Carmen Lawrence in 2009, and her speech titled ‘The Prejudice of Good People,’ addressing covert racism with a focus on healthcare.”

“This year, it’s timely to have Professor Doherty here, shining a light on the importance of broad knowledge and deep understanding of our cultural identity. The value of our culture is integral to the future of Australian society in order to sustain us,” said Paul.

At 4.30pm today the Dungala Kaiela Oration will be presented at Rumbalara Football Club (20 Mercury Drive, Shepparton). A recording will be available on www.kaielainstitute.org.au/ from Monday, September 5.
