They say that education is the key to success and that couldn’t be any truer when taking into account the training required to support the many varied roles across all industries in the region, and with increases in the number of people taking up a higher education qualification, the future never looked so bright.

Beginning in 2004 with just six students, and today catering for approximately 90, the Academy of Sport Health and Education (ASHE) offer educational opportunities in VPC, VCAL, Cert III Early Childhood, Cert IV AOD, Cert IV Community Services, Diploma Community Services, Diploma of Nursing, Bachelor and short course and is hoping to expand the courses offered in the future with the commencement of the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence (MCRE).

ASHE senior student services officer, Seldan Andrews said, “Over the past 12 months we have partnered with local educational organisations including GOTAFE, Partners in Training and Latrobe University where our students have been involved in food handling, first aid, CPR and life guard training to name a few.

“We currently have 12 staff and are hoping also to expand that number to deliver and service our young people here in the Goulburn Valley.

“Working at ASHE with all these incredible young people and watching them grow in all aspects of their journeys, and watching them succeed during their time at ASHE, is rewarding; knowing that I have passed on knowledge and assisted positively on our students lives.

“ASHE existing is very important to this community especially for our youth, particularly with the way the world is changing today.

“Being a cultural appropriate and culturally safe place and having a holistic approach, supportive environment, supportive engagement into higher education and strong leadership is where our success comes from.

“We are looking forward to moving into the MCRE at the end of March 2024. MCRE will deliver culturally responsive education, employment, health and wellbeing programs that drive broad, long-term economic benefits and shared prosperity for the region and Victoria.

“It’s important to continue to pave the way for young people across this country, to create opportunities, empower communities and continue to commit to excellences. The dedication towards providing quality education for indigenous communities and commitment to ensuring that indigenous youth receive a culturally responsive education,” Seldan said.
