FOR the green thumb autumn is the best time of the year. With the summer heat slowly slipping away and the soil still holding the remanence of its warmth, there is no better time to plant for strong roots.

Early autumn is the best time for brassica vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cauliflower. March is the time to plant your carrots, leek, rocket, and bok choy. While mid-autumn is the time to plant beetroot, spinach, and radish. As autumn ends it’s time to plant peas, sweet peas, and garlic.

Vegetables that grow best from seed tend to give results quickly, so plant these seeds for vegetables you can eat through the autumn and winter.

Onions are another autumn vegetable that thrive from seed. Onion varieties will be ready to eat at different times, so planting a little of each will give you options for your cooking throughout the season.

Another pro tip is to use eggshells in the garden to deter pests like snails, caterpillars, and slugs from attacking the seedlings. Crushed eggshells can add valuable nutrients back into the soil with the high level of calcium being very beneficial to plants.
