Providing a crucial part to the service

DID you know that when you purchase something from the GV Hospice Op Shop you are also contributing much needed funds to help pay for after-hours nursing staff? This is a vital community role that ensures the provision of 24/7 palliative care services through GV Hospice.

This extra community support which helps the charity, and ideally gives back to the community at the same time, is a scenario that works extremely well.

“Donations provided by the generosity of the community is a terrific way for the op shop to repurpose items and find them a new home, while it also gives back to an incredibly crucial service to help provide care for a person living with a life limiting illness,” said GV Op Shop manager, Darlene Crossley.

“I also love the way the Op Shop gives back to the community. It is a safe place where people can come weekly, let go of the world, browse while listening to music and find a bargain. It is a win win scenario,” she added.

The opportunity shop each day is supported by an amazing number of volunteers, some of whom have given up their time to help over decades.

Willie Johnstone has volunteered for over twenty years, although she faces her own health battles, she continues to give her time to a cause that she is extremely passionate about helping.

“I love volunteering here and the services are so important. People really need them, both patients and the community. These people are my family,” said Willie.

The opportunity shop stocks pre-loved clothing, shoes, sporting goods, manchester and an extensive range of household goods from bric-a-brac to larger pieces of furniture.

THE LOVE OF VOLUNTEERING… Peter McDougall has been volunteering for just over two years. His brother Rob inspired him to get involved with GV Hospice who is a long-standing patient care volunteer. Photo: Kelly Carmody
